Easthampstead Park School, Bracknell 3G artificial grass football pitch
When Easthampstead Park School wanted to rejuvenate their ageing multi-use synthetic turf pitch, SSL were called to plan, design and project manage the development. To facilitate the schools sporting curriculum and player trends, the refurbishment design centered on converting the facility to a FIFA 1 Star football pitch. Technical specifications allowed for a new 3G football turf and all new equipment and associated features; including floodlighting, fencing and clean access. To ensure the pitch retains long term performance, a seven year maintenance package was also commissioned. Construction was undertaken during winter 2010/11 and the new pitch was successfully delivered in March 2011.

The University of Manchester Two synthetic turf hockey pitches
STARS (Directorate of Sport, Trading And Residential Services) appointed SSL to oversee the refurbishment of the two synthetic turf pitches at The Firs Athletic Ground within The Armitage Centre campus. The design brief included the renewal of the playing surfaces and underlying base systems, plus new perimeter ball-stop fencing, floodlights and sports equipment. Construction works were finished within an impressive eight week period. The new pitches are a development hub for England Hockey’s Centre of Excellence , both having been certified to FIH Class 2 National pitch status. During July 2010, the pitches were used as match venues for the 2010 FIL World Lacrosse Championships and Festival, which was hosted by The University of Manchester
Owen Square, Bristol Multi Use Games Area
Rain abandoned play following every shower at Owen Square in Bristol and The Football Foundation asked SSL to save this underperforming Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). A detailed condition survey revealed the playing surface suffered from three distinct ‘in built’ problems that prevented adequate drainage and made the MUGA un-playable after rainfall. The only solution was to re-build the area with skilled workmanship using high-quality materials. SSL specified the replacement works and verified key stages of construction to ensure the facility became a valued asset to the Owen Square community.

- Floodlighting
- Perimeter ball-stop fencing
- Base, foundations, drainage and structural design (crib retainer)
- Sports equipment and site furniture
- Secure player, spectator and coach’s corridor
The facility was opened in June 2010 and has received commendations from our client, community football and rugby clubs and youth volunteering projects.

Cardiff University 3G artificial grass rugby / football pitch
SSL were invited to create a multi-functional solution to a poor grassed amenity at Cardiff Universitys Talybont Campus. The new artificially surfaced facility had to complement the external sports pitches provision and also alleviate over-use of sports turf. A considered design process cumulated in a half-sized rugby training pitch with small-sided football pitches and an additional basketball court. The design was enhanced with fencing, floodlighting, and equipment and access facilities. Installation works were completed within the allocated time and on budget, to the delight of the Client.
